    4908 Awakenings

Synopsis

Follow one woman’s journey through her life, with flashbacks as she grapples with the immense trauma of growing up with a sister besieged with Schizophrenia. Sharing how severe mental illness leaves families very little recourse for care. As the family grows, so does the mental illness striking yet another member. During the years of torment of untreated disease their family finds incredible strength to carry on and find joy in even the most harrowing circumstances.

My play, 4908 Awakenings intends to boldly illuminate the trauma that families experience from the abhorrent lack of treatment for individuals who suffer from severe mental illnesses (SMI). Sharing my personal accounts in order to create a safe place for people to share their own experiences. To have the hard conversations of WHY our country refuses to make treatment and care a priority and HOW we can move the care for individuals with SMI into the 21st century.

Families are unduly burdened with the care of their loved ones. The experience of contending with SMI is often isolating for families. When grief and trauma is seen and heard another level of healing is possible.  Which brings me hope. Which is why I’ve written 4908 Awakenings. We are not alone.
